  1. To add to the NY Times article about the Texas rape, an article was previously published by the NY Times on March 8, 2011.

    Gang Rape of Schoolgirl

The difference between the two articles is that the original article repeated - without refutation or critical commentary - the claims that the girl brought the rape on herself because of the way she was dressed. Essentially supporting rape culture.

    Choice Quotes:

“It’s just destroyed our community,” said Sheila Harrison, 48, a hospital worker who says she knows several of the defendants. “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.”

Residents in the neighborhood where the abandoned trailer stands — known as the Quarters — said the victim had been visiting various friends there for months. They said she dressed older than her age, wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s. She would hang out with teenage boys at a playground, some said.

  3. I find it disgusting that someone in their right mind would even write something like “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.” I doubt those boys were considering what this young girl would have to live with for the rest of her life! I am sure if the victim was this author's daughter, sister, or family a much different article would have been written.

  4. I agree with Denise's comment about the quote that was written in this article. It is rediculous to feel sympathy for any of these men. Rape is rape whether the girl (or boy) dresses racey or not. I think that this author may have been considering the type of town that this occurred in. It seems to be a low income community and the fact that the maority of these men have or will be in jail for other reasons added more drama to this story. I personally think that the author sort of made it obvious that this could happen because of the type of people that included in this situation. I think it is very bias and to go along with Denise's comment, I think that this article would have been written very differently if it was the author's daughter.

  5. Regarding the 14 year old girl in Bangladesh, that story really showed how sexist their culture is! That little girl got raped, trampled, whipped, and disgraced in front of everyone while the man got away. The story says he was sentenced to a whipping but got out of it, then it never talks about him again. I am intersted to know if any other punishment came to him.

Also, the government over there doesn't seem very interested in any of these crimes, their response was to send out a letter explaining that these crimes are illegal. It is obvious that they are not concerned with the sexist nature of these communities. The first autopsy that was preformed said the little girls death was a suicide which is crazy. After 101 lashings theres no way they couldn't find any injuries. I know our government and legal system aren't perfect, but they look impeccable compared to the government in Bangladesh.

  6. The article about the 14 year old girl is sickening. This young girl, who wasn't even old enough to be married, is raped and beaten by an older married man and she is punished for it. This is absolutely sickening. I don't understand how people can think like this. That mindset is foreign to me and makes absolutely no sense at all. And the report from the hospital saying that her death was suiside is rediculous. Again, how can people think this way? It is inhumane and completely immoral.
