  1. What is the essence of being human?
    Not understanding the opposite sex.

Can our minds exist seperately from our bodies? If they could, we’d just send our minds to class and sleep in every morning.

  2. How many skeptics does it take to change a light bulb?
Actually, they won't do it--they have no sense of urgency about the situation--they aren't sure they're really in the dark...

How many Cartesians does it take to change a light bulb?
None--unfortunately, when the bulb blew out, they were all so shocked that they stopped thinking for that brief moment--and 'poof', they all just blinked out of existence.

    Feminist
A radical feminist is getting on a bus when, just in front of her, a man gets up from his seat. She thinks to herself, "Here's another man trying to keep up the customs of a patriarchical society by offering a poor, defenseless woman his seat," and she pushes him back onto the seat.

A few minutes later, the man tries to get up again. She is insulted again and refuses to let him up.

Finally, the man says, "Look, lady, you've got to let me get up. I'm two miles past my stop already!"

  3. From Denise's comments "Can our minds exist separately from our bodies?" I agree with her that it cannot. However, does your mind always connect well with your body? Sometimes we get urges, feelings, etc... that we can't explain or even know where they come from. Or can you remember a time where you are trying to tell your body what to do, but for some reason it is not working right? It is almost like every so rarely our bodies and minds do fall out of sync for a small moment in time.

It reminds me of a dream that most people have had. This dream is basically is of you running away from something/someone or running to get somewhere fast. However, you’re running so much slower than you know you can. Your mind is telling your body, "Run Faster, Run Faster!!!" but your body is not responding. I know it’s still a dream, but sometimes I feel like you can catch glimpses of this in real life.

  4. An interesting point, "our minds cannot exist without our bodies." But reverse that, can our bodies exist with out our minds? I suppose "exist" would have to be defined. But I'd argue that a physical body can live without, but a mind cannot live without the body.

  5. On the topic of mind/body relationships, I agree with Maura. Especially in the light of modern medical technology, it is becoming more realistic for physical bodies to live without a mind, but not vice-versa.

I believe that the physical body often limits the mind; I can daydream about flying and mentally will myself to fly as I throw myself off a ledge, but no matter how determined my mind is to fly, my body is just going to fall.

  6. I agree with the previous statements. At the same time, I have found it interesting when I hear professors say there are "sleeping" or "dead" people walking in the hall ways. Our minds are still "there" but our bodies seem to be following every day motions. For instance, sometimes after arriving to school, I don't remember much of the drive because it is so repetitive and day-to-day and seems like my mind "disappeared" for those 15 minutes. It is strange to think that our bodies still go through the motions even if our minds lapse for a little while.

  7. The First Law of Philosophy: For every philosopher, there exists an equal and opposite philosopher.
The Second Law of Philosophy: They're both wrong
    -----
    What is Mind? No Matter.
    What is Body? Never Mind.

    FINAL EXAM:
    Q: Is this a question?
A: If this is an answer!

  9. I think that the American culture/media forces our minds and body to separate at times... There is a mindset (I use this term loosely) of what the body should do. Things like go to school, get a job, get married, buy a house, save money... These are things are bodies do, while all the while we ignore our minds. Our minds have become dull because we don't need to think anymore. This is perhaps why the world is in the state it is today (economic/energy/humanitarian crisis). We are told what to think and when to think it... To break this system a real effort must be made.

So yes, I do believe a body can function without mind, because we have been doing this for years. It just makes me wonder if we can get it back? Can it be turned on and off like a light switch, or if left unused, will the mind simply disappear for good?

  10. from Patricia
An engineer, a scientist, a mathematician, and a philosopher are hiking through the hills of Scotland, when they see a lone black sheep in a field.
The engineer says, "What do you know, it looks like the sheep around here are black." The scientist looks at him skeptically and replies, "Well, at least some of them are." The mathematician considers this for a moment and replies, "Well, at least one of them is." Then the philosopher turns to them and says, "Well, at least on one side."

  13. This is intersting. Can our body's exist without our minds? Well I can't say for sure but I know i sure feel like my mind has gone on vacation every once in a while.

When i'm at church, I look out from the front (I sing one of the masses) and I see blank expressionless faces and wonder how many of those people's body's are pressent without their minds. They all kinda look like robots just spitting out prayers without really even recognizing what they'er saying or even why they are where they are. Kinda sad, really.

  14. The point of philosophy is to start with something so simple as to seem not worth stating, and to end with something so paradoxical that no one will believe it.
